As we start the new season, it’s time for collection of membership fees and raising any issues, ideas, suggestions for the next 12 months.

Outings from 2024. PDI & Print Competition.

This will be the first competition of the year with prints and PDI’s from any one of the outings members attended in 2024.

Rules: ThIs is a competition of ONE ROUND open to all members.  Up to TWO PRINTS and TWO PDI’s of images taken within the prescribed times and areas of the club outings of the previous season may be entered. When titling entries please add location. Outdoor evening events have a separate evening for display and for comment by the membership, but the images may also be entered for this competition.

One of those evenings where members can bring anything they like down to the club and talk the members through their set of images. It can be a sequence, something they have done recently, their holiday snaps or anything the wider membership might benefit from.

Paul Adams and Richard Winston will be taking us through what is required if a photographer wishes to apply for a photographic distinction and how submissions are assessed.

Set Subject Round 1 - Macro

This is a PDI & Print Competition.

Members judging.

Rules: ThIs is a competition of TWO ROUNDS open to all members.  The subject for each round will be specified by the committee before the start of the season. Up to TWO PRINTS and TWO PDI’s may be entered in EACH OF THE TWO ROUNDS. Judging will be by members’ votes. The highest percentage of votes from each round counts towards an aggregate score.

This evening will all be about your camera. Bring it in, do a bit of ‘show and tell’ and ask fellow members about that specific function you never did quite find or what that small button on the bottom left corner actually does. Its also an opportunity to find out from fellow members how they set their cameras up for their specific style and usage.

PDI - Nature

Rules: ThIs is a competition of ONE ROUND open to all members. Up to TWO PDI’s may be entered. Nature is defined as flora, fauna, geology and astro-photography. Flora should not be cultivated and, similarly, fauna should not include domesticated animals (including pets). Mounted specimens and flower arrangements are not permitted. Photographs should enable a well-informed person to identify the subject material. Accurate titling, including latin names, is encouraged. Photo-manipulation should be minimal with no substantial cloning..

PDI - Landscape

Rules: ThIs is a competition of ONE ROUND open to all members. Up to TWO PDI’s  may be entered.

Titles should include as much information as possible, e.g. location, age, what part of the whole, maker, etc.

Rules: A single round PRINT and PDI competition with 2 photos allowed in each category. Colour or black and white and composite images are allowed. The final picture must primarily include images taken by the photographer. AI Generative Fill should not be used to create additions to the overall image.

Print Knockout Competition

This is a Print Competition.

Members judging.

Rules: Two prints may be entered for this knock out competition where photo titles are drawn from a hat with members’ votes deciding the winner in each match. Winners go through to the next round and so on until there are just two pictures left which will compete against each other in the final.

NB: The Competition Manager will need to have the titles of your prints a week before the competition at the latest. Please label your prints with the title only. YOU SHOULD NOT PUT YOUR NAME ON THE LABEL. You will then bring your prints along to the club on the night of the competition. When you have sent me your titles the competition manager will make labels for them which will be used to draw out of a hat at the club to create each round with one print competing against another. A simple show of hands from the audience will determine which print goes through to the next round. ONLY PHOTOS NOT PREVIOUSLY USED IN CLUB COMPETITIONS ARE ELLIGIBLE.

PDI & Print Portfolio of 3 AND Creative Photography

This is a Print & PDI Competition.

Members judging.

Rules: Portfolio of Three - A ONE ROUND PRINT and PDI competition to be judged by the members. UP TO TWO PDIs, each made up of 3 images linked by content and presented on a single canvas, may be entered. PDIs should, as usual, conform to the standard size of 1400x1050 pixels. For the PRINT competition TWO ENTRIES are again allowed. An entry can be on one mount or 3 separate prints. The prints should be labelled LEFT, CENTRE, and RIGHT in the order to be displayed.

Creative Photography – A single round PRINT and PDI competition with 2 photos allowed in each category. Colour or black and white and composite images are allowed. The final picture must primarily include images taken by the photographer. AI Generative Fill should not be used to create additions to the overall image.

Rules: PDI - THREE ROUND COLOUR. In this competition a first place and trophy will be awarded to the photographer accruing the highest aggregate score over the 3 rounds. For EACH ROUND members may submit TWO PDI’s.

Portrait - Up to TWO PDI’S may be entered. Images must include at least one human face as the main feature of the photograph.

Audio Visual

This is an AV Competition.

Rules: An AV Production should predominately consist of a sequence of still photographic images, the majority of such images with a minimum of 60% of the AV sequence being the original work of the entrant, together with a synchronised sound track. The use of third party images, animated graphics, video clips or other visual material, whilst not excluded, should be limited and appropriate to the production.

There is no restriction on subject matter. The duration of a sequence must not exceed 10 minutes. An entrant may enter up to two sequences, marking their entries one & two, one should be your preferred choice and if time permits the second sequence may also be shown. Your entries should be sent to Richard Martin as an EXE. Programme or an MP4 file, i.e. the Sequence must run with no additional software requirements. The AV should NOT display the author or photographers name. The Sequence should be programmed to return to desktop at the end.

Not quite sure what this will involve at the time of constructing the programme, but expect a lizard and snake to make an appearance.
